View All Tax QuestionsTax ramifications of cash gift from family member
Asked onMonday, June 12, 2023 by DavidI'm in Virginia. After my mother passed a bit ago (she lived in Michigan), my sister sold mom's house (it had been quit claimed to my sister's name shortly prior to mom's passing) and split the proceeds evenly between we three siblings. So, I received a check for ~$20,000. My question is: what are the tax ramifications of receiving that amount? I assume it would be considered a gift from a family member? If I am going to owe a substantial amount (to VA and/or federal taxes), can I pay that in advance?
selling rental home lived in 2 years
Asked onMonday, June 12, 2023 by AnnWe purchased a home out of state in 2010 to move into later. It was a rental for 12 years (depreciated yearly) and we have now moved to AZ and live in it. If we live in it for 2 years is ALL of the appreciation (approx 350K) excluded under the 500k married filing jointly? There is about 60k of depreciation I understand is taxable and would go under income? Thx, Ann

Prepare in advance for 2023 tax filing
Asked onMonday, June 12, 2023 by RobynHello, I need to know the (estimated) amount that I need to save in order to pay the penalties when I file my 2023 taxes. Last week I was laid off and unfortunately my pension was moved into a 403b so the withdrawal incurs the penalties and I need to understand the total amount and be prepared to pay the 10% and early withdrawal penalties when they are due. If there is time: do I need to liquidate my HSA funds after being laid off since I no longer have a HDHP? Thank you for your time. ~Robyn

Question related to use tax
Asked onMonday, June 12, 2023 by Luis DavidHello, I moved from Mexico to the United States around 8 years ago having a visa that let me study but not work as I was a dependant, and during that time I brought personal property from Mexico to the United States. I became a permanent resident around 4 years after. As I learn more about taxes, I wonder if I was required to pay use tax on that personal property that I brought from Mexico to North Carolina as I paid sales tax on that property on Mexico when I bought it there, and now having moved from North Carolina to Texas, if I need to pay use tax on my personal property as I paid taxes for some of them on North Carolina, plus the stuff that I bought on Mexico some long time ago.

Am I self enjoyed?
Asked onSunday, June 11, 2023 by AHi, this is a 2 part question. I babysit a friend's child 2 days a week (at my house, providing food, purchasing my own toys, etc for him), making $50/ day. (so roughly $400/month and will be $5000/year. She pays me cash, sometimes Venmo. I assumed I'm considered self-employed and will report this income on my 2023; married filing joint income tax form. Additionally, starting next week, I'm helping a family 2-3 days/ week with 30 min childcare/ transportation and 2 ish hours of housework. $50/day. They be said their cpa said to issue a 1099. It may only be for the summer (but possibly continuing after), so roughly $1800 for the summer. I'm just wanting to make sure I'm doing taxes correctly. Do I need to file quarterly? At this point the TOTAL income I'm bringing in will be around $7,800 for the year. My husband makes about $75, 000 (regular W2 employee). Thank you!
